Wax Sealing with Zetta Florence: Exploring our Wax Sealing Kit range

Wax sealing – an elusive craft … but ever so easy once you get your head around the basics!

Throughout history, wax sealing has been used to authenticate, secure and personalise important documents and items. Dating back to ancient civilizations, it was originally used to label and distinguish clay vessels. It was popularized during the Medieval period by wealthy merchants and noblesin trade, personal and political matters. Whilst the artform declined with the advance of modern technology; the charm and nostalgic allure of wax sealing has re-captured the hearts of audiences today.

The wax seal has now become a unique way to personalise, decorate and signify special events and momentous occasions. It adds a creative touch to greeting cards, letters and invitations; elevates gift wrapping; and is a distinctive way to brand a business.

Once you get your head around the logical steps and fundamental tools of wax sealing – it becomes and easy and joyful way to express yourself. And we’re here to help!

At its most basic; you will need a Stamp, the Wax and Heat.

  • The Stamp is used to make an impression in the hot sealing wax in order to form the final seal. The stamps at Zetta Florence are all solid brass, ensuring durability, a non-stick finish and a weighty pressure when creating the seal. Additionally, the screw top means they are easily interchangeable with our handle options. Our Rosewood Handle is a great starting point, light and durable, whilst our Solid Brass Handle offers an extra touch of sophistication and luxury. We offer the full Alphabet in a striking botanical design, as well as a range of Symbols suitable for a vast array of occasions. View our full collection here.
  • The Wax is the material that we stamp into in order to form the final seal. At Zetta Florence, we offer three different methods of wax to cater to each individual’s needs. Our Wax with Wick is a great starting point – both for beginners, and for creating one-of seals every now and again. Our Wax Beads are a great option for making multiple seals at a time, for marbling seals with different colour combinations, and for those who like extra flair and meditative process of this method. Our packs of Wax Sticks are perfect for making a large amount of wax seals – ideal for weddings, events and greeting cards en-mass.View our full collection here.
  • The Heat. In order to reshape the wax into our desired form, we first need to melt it down. Similar to a candle, melt our Wax with Wick by lighting the wick and letting the wax drip onto the desired surface before placing the stamp gently into the hot wax. Wait approximately 30 seconds for the wax to dry before removing the stamp to reveal the finished product. We recommend holding the wax parallel to the table, and twirling gently to achieve the best result – holding the wax upside-down will wear down the wick and leave soot in your seal. Melt the Wax Beads using our Wax Melting Spoon! Our spoon is especially designed for this purpose, with a spout for ease of pouring, and a protective handle to safely holdover the heat. Place 3-4 small beads into the spoon and heat over a candle flame. Once the wax has liquefied, pour it onto the desired surface and stamp to create the seal. Again, wait for the wax to cool, then remove and reveal the finished product! In order to clean to change wax colours - wipe any residual wax from the spoon whilst warm (be careful here – it’s metal!) Any excess wax or unsightly seals can be cooled, chopped up and re-melted in the spoon, avoiding unnecessary wastage. Our Wax Melting Pot & Spoon Set is designed to sit over a tea-light candle and is a beautiful and functional way to use the beads, plus makes a dainty desk ornament. Finally, the packs of Wax Sticks are designed for use in our Low Temperature Wax Sealing Gun. This method isquick and precise; especially suited to producing a large quantity of seals. Plug in the gun, and feed a wax stick through the back opening. Add more wax to push the first stick through once it becomes too small. Once heated up, squeeze the trigger to produce the melted wax through the front nozzle. Extend the leg-stand to keep the gun upright whilst using, and make sure to place a protective layer underneath in case of any dribbles. Place the stamp in the hot wax and voila! A tip for making bulk seals - keep the brass stamp on something cold (ie: a bag of frozen peas) in between sealing to get the best results. See our Instruction and Safety Guide for more details. The Wax Sticks can also be cut up using scissors and melted in our Wax Melting Spoon as described above.

We hope you fall in love with wax seals just as much as we have!
